Launching Crisis Hotline | DreamActivist.org
from their email, please reblog/donate if possible:
Yanelli Hernandez was deported on January 31, 2012. In her honor UndocuHealth.org was launched that very same day. UndocuHealth is a project aimed at providing undocumented youth with mental health support, whether it be connecting with free resources or providing access to someone to talk to, at all times.
We need your support for the UndocuHealth Crisis Line. The hotline will be a toll-free number anyone can call at anytime to talk to a live person. Before we launch the hotline we hope to complete an intensive training with those who will be volunteering. Will you donate $25 to support to support the Undocumented Crisis Line?
All monies raised will go towards a training needed to get this hotline off the ground. We don’t want to just put anyone on the receiving end of calls, especially since we know some of the calls will require some amount of training. We want to make sure the volunteers are prepared to handle any situation; be it someone contemplating suicide or someone just wanting to vent. This will be a bi-lingual hotline open to anyone undocumented (we are working on more than just Spanish and English!). There is a lot of work to do before we can launch it, that’s why we are hoping you can make a donation so we can get to work.
Yanelli’s case was an amazing case to be a part of. Her willingness to be open about her own attempt at suicide really helped many of us open up about our own battles. Her case allowed us to work closer with Joaquin Luna’s family, all of whom pretty much said, “we know everything happens for a reason and it is our job to make sure Joaquin’s life helps so many others.” We have undertaken this UndocuHealth project for that very same reason, we need to take care of ourselves and make sure we can help other undocumented folks do the same.
In a perfect world we’d be hosting an in-person training for the 10+ volunteers we have to take on this Crisis Line. If we are able to raise the funds to do that we will, if not we’ll figure something else out. At the end of the day the mental health of our undocumented friends and family comes first and we need to find a way to look out for each other. If you can please donate $25 to support the Undocumented Crisis Line.
If you are part of an organization, a mental health professional or someone interested in sponsoring the Crisis Hotline and having your group/name listed please make a $250 donation and reply to this email so we can make that possible.
Again, thank you to everyone who took action to help Yanelli. Both she and her family were truly inspired by what they saw take hold in just a few days. We hope, as they do, that this ongoing work will help so many more undocumented youth.
Thank you.
